The Truth About Tigers

occasional musings and free verse poetry, approximately

North Shore

What I remember most is the ocean.
How in winter, waves would swell thirty feet,
reaching, tilting, then collapsing
to rearrange the beach.
And how we wouldn’t surf,
content to sit in the sand,
hand in hand
on a Friday afternoon,
and simply be.

Lovely. I love the beach – probably my favourite place to be.

Beautiful poem about what sounds like a beautiful memory. I love it. I’ve never seen waves that big! Your description makes it vivid.

Thank you, Lia! Yes, the waves on the North Shore of Oahu are pretty impressive! I was stationed there for about 4 years, and while I did surf some, I never got good enough (or brave enough!) to venture out in those conditions! A beautiful place to sit and watch the ocean though…

I was wondering where it was! And that is so cool that you surfed (in the right conditions :))! The poem is simply and deeply beautiful. I love the way it’s crafted, yet that the vibe is free and effortless.

Thank you, friend. sometimes I feel like I should always write with a strict 44 word limit… it really forces one to trim the fat!

Love it! I’d actually forgot you had a word limit! Yeah constraints can definitely help sometimes!

Indeed! Feels like a lifetime ago, and in many ways I suppose that’s true! Thanks, Melissa.
