In stoic ranks
marble sentries stand firm
‘neath Virginia’s whispering canopy.
Summer’s breath scorches,
winter’s chill gnaws—
they remain unyielding,
guardians of stillness.
The last full measure given,
each stone a testament
to duty and sacrifice,
missions now complete.
Rest easy, brave souls,
for we shall bear the fight
henceforth.
I wrote this poem… well, I’m not sure when. Many, many years ago, when I was in my 20s and still in the Army, I think. It wasn’t called “Section 60” at the time. I never did anything with it, and I don’t think it’s my finest work by any means, but I figured I’d go ahead and set it free here, on Memorial Day. – Nick
In honor of Colin, Todd, John, Daniel, and all of our brave men and women who answered the call and made the ultimate sacrifice.
